Phuket is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, and many historical neighborhoods in the city have been carefully preserved. Since the 17th century, Chinese and European migrants have settled in Phuket, drawn by the opportunities of rich tin mines of the island, in the process developing a unique architectural style combining Chinese and Portuguese influences. Many of these buildings have been converted into gourmet and casual-dining restaurants, intriguing art galleries, and boutique guest-houses, making the Old Town hip and vibrant as well as historically significant.
